Cat Ba Island sits just south of Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam. Getting there with children is very doable, even with younger kids. Ha Long Bay may be the most famous, but Lan Ha Bay often wins with families.

This is the most common and hassle-free way to get from Hanoi to Cat Ba.
- What it includes: Pickup in Hanoi Old Quarter. Then there’s a road transfer to Hai Phong area. After that, take a speedboat or cable car. Finally, a bus will take you to Cat Ba town.
- Time: ~3–4 hours total.
- Approx cost: from about $15–$20 USD / person one-way (bus + speedboat/cable car).
- Speedboat: quick ~8-minute crossing, less waiting than ferry.
- Cable car: scenic option with great views. Have to pay separately for a minimal fare.
- Comfort: Air-conditioned buses, sometimes hotel pickup/drop-off.

Cat Ba Cable Car (Quick Win for Kids)
Once you reach Hai Phong and you will have the choice to take a ferry or a cable car to Cat Ba Island. We chose the cable car—and it was absolutely the right decision. The kids loved it. The Cat Ba cable car holds world records for the longest sea-crossing cable car. It also boasts the tallest cable car tower. This makes it a memorable experience on its own.

2. Private Car / Taxi (Most Comfortable)
Best for families, groups with lots of luggage, or those who want flexibility.
- What it is: private driver from Hanoi → Got Pier or ferry area → transfer on to Cat Ba by ferry or speedboat.
- Drive time: ~2.5–3.5 hours total.
- Approx fare: private car transfers usually cost significantly more than buses (varies by company).

3. Train + Ferry (Budget + Local Experience)

- Pros: Cheapest option and interesting local experience.

4. Motorbike
Some travelers ride to the ferry terminal and take their bike on the ferry. It’s not as easy with kids or heavy luggage, but possible if you’re confident riding in Vietnam.

We chose option 1, the bus-and-cable car combination. We booked our hotel in Cat Ba just two days before leaving—not ideal, but it worked out surprisingly well.
Once the hotel was booked, they contacted us before arrival, which is very common in Vietnam. Most homestays and hotels will reach out to offer help with airport transfers, activities, cruises, and transportation. We arranged our transportation from Hanoi to Catba, Lan Ha Bay cruise and the bus to our next destination, all through our Cat Ba hotel. It made everything very convenient.
The hosts were genuinely kind and helpful. They really went out of their way to accommodate our plans and find the most convenient options. It felt like a one-stop shop for the entire Cat Ba experience.
All communication was done through WhatsApp i n clear, fluent English, which made planning easy. In person, English can sometimes be limited (or nonexistent), but Google Translate was always there to save the day.
The bus picked us up directly from our hotel. In our case, the street was too narrow for the bus to enter, so a guide came to help us with our luggage and escorted us to the main road for pickup. Along the way, the bus picked up other passengers leaving Hanoi, but the process was smooth and not stressful.
The total travel time was about 4–4.5 hours, including two toilet breaks, which worked well for kids.
Best Time to Visit Cat Ba Island With Children
We visited Cat Ba Island in July. It was not the best time due to many local tourists and crowded beaches. However, the Lan Ha Bay cruise was not crowded. Although it’s warm and humid, it’s a great time for water activities, ideal for kids who enjoy swimming and kayaking.
- Best months: March–May and September–October
- Avoid: Peak summer weekends (crowded, hot), Catba island is very popular among local tourists, so avoid weekends and local holidays.
- Winter: Cooler, fewer boat tours, still scenic
For families, shoulder season offers the best balance of weather and crowd levels.

We decided to stay near Cat Ba town for easy access to restaurants and the harbor without needing taxis. With kids, we prioritized location over luxury. Rustic house and cafe offered family rooms, air conditioning, and breakfast, which made mornings much simpler before our activities.
The hotel we stayed at was comfortable and welcoming. It wasn’t a luxury hotel, but it was clean, spacious, and perfect for an overnight stay. Located on the edge of downtown, it was still within easy walking distance to everything we needed.

Things to Do in Cat Ba With Kids
Beaches on Cat Ba Island
Cat Ba has several kid-friendly beaches right near town:
They were quite busy with many local tourists. The trail connecting Cat Cot 1 and Cat Cot 3 was better than the beaches. Definitely check the trail, highly recommended.
- Cat Co 1 – Calm, swimmable, easy access
- Cat Co 2 – Slightly quieter, scenic
- Cat Co 3 – Close to resorts, clean facilities
Distance: 1.2 km
Difficulty: Easy, paved
Best time: Late afternoon or sunset
Stroller-friendly: Mostly yes, there are steep stairs getting off to the beaches from the trail.
Safety tip: Handrails are present, but supervise younger kids.
Getting around Catba Island
An open electric car is a good way to get around town. You can rent a taxi for yourself or share one and pay individually. Or if you have the time and energy, you can actually walk around and get to your destination. It is very walkable and close to everything.
Family-Friendly Boat Tours
Many Lan Ha Bay cruises are half-day or day tours, which are better suited for families than overnight cruises. Initially, we were disappointed about missing the famous Ha Long/Lan Ha Bay overnight cruise, but after taking the day cruise, we were very satisfied. Time on the water can feel long, and the kids became impatient before reaching the kayaking spot. Keep in mind, Lan Ha Bay is vast, and it takes over an hour to get to the kayaking area. Therefore, the half-day cruise was perfect for us since we experienced the bay for the right amount of time and returned before the kids got too bored.
A half-day cruise may mean missing monkeys, caves, biking, overnight squid fishing, and other special activities. Check the itineraries to choose the right cruise. However, if you just want to enjoy the majestic bay, kayak, seafood lunch, and have fun in the water, the half-day cruise is a great choice.
Town vibe
When we visited Cat Ba Island in July 2025, there was quite a bit of construction going on. Still, it didn’t feel overwhelming. The town was very walkable, with restaurants, small markets, and street vendors everywhere.
At night, the town really came alive. As the weather cooled, locals and tourists filled the streets, giving the area a festive, lively atmosphere. The streets glowed under the lights and were filled with the smells of geoduck clams and mantis shrimp cooking at nearby stalls.
Young people gathered around vendors, laughing and enjoying coconut ice cream and Vietnamese sweet soups known as chè. It felt vibrant and welcoming, even with kids in tow.
One of the highlights for our children was the go-karting. The karts had bright neon lights and loud engines, and rentals were easy to find. Our boys absolutely loved it. After riding, they declared it the “best day ever” and said, “I love Vietnam,” which pretty much says it all.
We even spotted random fireworks lighting up the sky. Locals told us it might have been someone’s birthday—just another fun and unexpected moment that added to the charm of Cat Ba town.

Lan Ha Bay Day Cruise With Kids (Our Honest Experience)
Our main challenge was deciding on the overnight cruise. It cost nearly $400 for a 2-day, 1-night trip. If you visit local travel agents in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, they offer fancy brochures with different cruise options and will inform you that the listed prices aren’t the real ones and will be lower.
We booked a family-friendly Lan Ha Bay cruise through our hotel. We informed them what we were looking for and how much time we had before heading to our next destination. Everything was well taken care of thereafter, and things went very smoothly.
We were picked up by a bus from our hotel and taken to the harbor, which was crowded with tourists and vendors selling Vietnamese hats and souvenirs. Once you board your cruise and sail away, the crowd and other boats fade into the vastness of Lan Ha Bay. You pass by majestic karsts while your guide briefs you on the itinerary.
The cruise docks in the middle of nowhere and helps us get to the kayaks. They inflate the inflatable slides and the floater for kids to play on. Our boys couldn’t wait to get on them. You will be served a welcome drink, followed by a group toast and a very grand seafood lunch. After kayaking into the bay for a while, you get back to the boat, and the kids play while you enjoy some deck time. And after some time, which felt like enough time on the sea, it was time to head back. We then passed by floating villages and finally returned to the dock.
The half-day cruise didn’t include biking, visiting the floating villages, or any caves.
Our cruise was called the Serenity Premium Cruise. Prices typically range from $35-$50/person for a half-day cruise, depending on season and cruise type. They do offer some discounts for infants and toddlers. Since prices often change, we recommend checking current availability and rates directly at Lan Ha Bay cruise.
Is Lan Ha Bay Safe for Kids?
Yes—with normal travel precautions.
When we were leaving Hanoi, the guide advised us to leave Cat Ba Island before that Sunday as there was a storm coming. Since we were there for just one night, it was safe and blessed with a beautiful day. Howeever 3 days later, while we were already at our next destination, the Ha Long Bay incident happened, where a cruise had capsized, and people died. Sometimes you can not control things, but be sure to check the weather and listen to locals for warnings.
What parents should know:
- Life jackets are provided on boats and kayaks
- The waters are calm
- Check the weather in advance
- Tours move at a relaxed pace
- Bring your motion sickness pills if you are prone to it
- Bring any special emergency medications that you or your child may need
- Follow the guide and listen to safety instructions carefully
Skip strenuous hikes or long cave crawls with younger kids. Stick to water-based activities and beaches.
